Assisted Living Facilities

p2Assisted living emerged in the 1990’s as the next step of continuing care for people who cannot live independently in a private residence, but who also do not require the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Many senior living providers promote the Assisted Living designation, as a philosophy of care and services that foster independence and dignity.

When the Assisted Living Facilities were established, other alternative housing emerged such as Adult Family Care Homes, Independent Living, and Alzheimer- dementia units. Small 6 beds facilities gained popularity because they can provide more personalized care (home type). They are licensed and regulated by the same agencies that regulated the Assisted Living Facilities, regardless of the size of the facility.

It is important to have a clear understanding of the concept of Assisted Living Facilities service provided (ALF).

A future resident for an ALF is usually in need of at least one or more ADL’S (Assisting Daily Activities), like showering, medication management, toileting, dressing.

The staff is trained to provide assistance with those ADL’S, including all 3 meals regulated by a dietitian, housekeeping, laundry and social activities are included.

Facilities are paid privately, however there is financial assistance through the Veteran’s Administration, Long Term Care Insurance and state programs, if certain requirements are met.

Assisted Living Facilities is living in a residential home-like environment with care, while Nursing Home Living is primarily a medical institution.

Many families want to keep their loved ones at home as long as possible, but that may not be for their best interest as safety may be a concern.

Most important is the care of your loved one. If “home” can no longer provide the safety and adequate care emotionally and physically, then it is time to think of giving them what they deserve “quality of live”……….a right chosen Assisted Living Facility.
